Directed by Leila Ballentyne, this was the Brick Handbag entry for the Barclay's business competition that took place in the summer of 2010. We didn't win, but we had a hoot making it! Huge thanks again to all the people involved, in particular Leila for her inspiring direction, the star of the show Ceri Ann Thomas, Emily Grant for her behind the scenes expertise and Chris Chapman from Three Circles Audio for all his sound & filming genius.
"Two days after attending a Brick Handbag course I was making a short cut on my bike through an industrial estate in Cambridge at night. Three teenage boys were coming towards me, making a lot of noise. One of them stood infront of me, with his arms out. In retrospect, I wish I had just swerved and kept cycling, but I came to a halt. Nevertheless, when he reached into my basket, my brain clicked into gear. I shouted, 'Get Off!', whilst knocking his arm out of the way with mine, and then cylcing off - as fast as I could!
Without my few hours with Brick Handbag I would not have done that. I would have remained immoble, and passively waited to see what happened next. Afterwards, I appreciated how empowering the course had been. I realised that I could act, and by doing so, hugely improve my chances of getting away without being hurt, or unnecessarily intimidated. This was a great feeling.
So thank you Brick Handbag. "
